A husband has died just one day after his wife of 68 years passed away from congestive heart failure.
Bob Johnson, 88, from Minnesota said goodbye to his wife, Corrine, 87, on November 24 before dying just one day later from cancer.
The couple’s family said it was no coincidence that Bob died 33 hours after the death of his wife, sharing their belief that he ‘waited’ for their mother to ‘go first’, and that the couple ‘went on their terms’.
‘I sort of thought he looked like he could go for weeks,’ Bruce Johnson, the couple’s son, told KARE11. ‘As soon as mom died he went downhill and died in a day. It’s hard to imagine it’s a coincidence.’
Bob’s health was actually worse than Corrine’s before she was admitted into the hospital for congestive heart failure.
‘When mom passed, they pulled the curtain between the two beds, he just stared at the curtain,’ Beth Kinkeade, the Johnson’s daughter, told the publication.
The couple shared a kiss a few days before Corrine’s passing. She also whispered to Bob she loved him in that moment.
Together, Bob and Corrine were honored during a funeral service on Tuesday at Scandian Grove Lutheran Church in rural St. Peter.
Their children expressed how they thought the couple went out on their own terms, doing it so they weren’t without each other for long.
‘They went on their terms,’ youngest son Brent Johnson said.
To him, his father was always the perfect gentlemen when it came to his mother by putting her first.
‘So it was only fitting that in the end he waited for mother to go first and then he passed away,’ Brent said.
In 1951, the couple married and went on to raise their seven children together on Norseland Eastview Farm, where they lived together for 67 years. Until six months ago, the couple lived independently on their farm.
This all changed, though, once they both experienced a decline in their health.
The couple is survived by their seven children, 14 grandchildren, and 15 great-grand children.
